For many reasons, clients are reluctant to express what styles, colours and furniture pieces really inspire them. Instead, more often than not, they’re concerned about what other people think and whether it’s suitable for sale in the future, before they’ve even bought it!

Nothing makes a space feel more like a home than adding a piece of you to the equation. There’s certainly no harm in spending time on Pinterest finding what styles you like, but a home is more than just a replication of an image. To feel truly comfortable and at ease in your own space, you need to add a little something of ‘you’ to it. Here are four ways you can let your personality shine in your home and be proud of it.

1. Turn to your wardrobe to find a suitable palette and theme
What are you currently wearing? Do you like colour? Are you into stripes or floral patterns? Your wardrobe will reveal a little bit about your overall taste, so use these details to form the foundation of your home’s design concept.

2. Add depth and character to your spaces
You can achieve this by layering tabletops, bookcases and shelves with your favourite objects, coveted coffee-table books and collection of art (whether it be something you’ve made or purchased). Each of these treasures are an expression of you and your family. Put aside any fears you have about cluttering your home and create little vignettes of personal treasures dotted throughout. It’s these personal mementos that add character and personality to your space.

3. Don’t follow the ‘rules’ you read
Don’t just blindly follow what you read online or in magazines. Rather, embrace what you love about their style and and add your own personal touch. This may include using furniture pieces in unexpected ways or in unexpected places. For example, if you prefer to create a living room with only armchairs and beanbags, rather than a sofa, then so be it. Create a layout and style that accommodates you and your family’s needs.

4. Avoid trends and be true to your own taste
Just because pastel colours are popular at the moment, it does not mean you have to subscribe to this palette. If black and white interior spaces are your thing, then stick with it! The benefit of listening to your own intuition is that it’s likely to create a home that will stand the test of time for you.

It’s not about creating a space that will make other people happy. it’s all about designing a home that will make you and your family proud to live in it.
